- NET SET GO!
Dear Parents and families,
Last Wednesday our NHSSA Winter Sports Roster got underway with plenty of enthusiasm and some good competition as teams establish themselves and start to put their skills into practice. Thank you to Mrs Swanson, Mr Innis and Mr Gidas for volunteering to accompany our AFL football, netball and soccer teams throughout the season.
Congratulations to our primary students who recently competed in the ENE Combined Carnival held at St Helens. When I spoke to staff and parents who attended, it was wonderful to hear them talk about the courage and aspiration demonstrated by our students as they gave their best and supported each other throughout the day. A special congratulations must go to the following students who were selected to compete at the PSST State Athletics Carnival, held at the St Leonards Athletics Centre in Launceston, on Friday last week.

Covid-19 Term 2 Message
Coming into the cold and flu season, it’s important that we all continue to keep healthy and safe. To ensure we can keep on top of COVID and also cold and flu, make sure you:
- Be alert to any symptoms of cold or flu that you or your child may exhibit
- Get tested for COVID if you or your child have symptoms
- Practise good hygiene, such as covering coughs and sneezes and washing hands
- If you or your child do get sick, stay at home until symptoms have passed, even if a COVID test is negative
Remember, symptoms include fever, tiredness, cough, headache, sore throat, sniffling and sneezing.
To keep our school safe, we are still:
- continuing with increased cleaning
- making sure there is plenty of soap, sanitiser and tissues available
- applying restrictions to large gatherings of adults and encouraging physical distancing
- requiring visitors to check-in on our sites
Mobile Phone Policy
It is timely to remind parents and students of our Mobile Phone Policy, aligned to DoE requirements for all schools. Mobile phones are required to be switched off and passed into the administration office at the beginning of the school day. While we live in a world surrounded by technology, we are aware that mobile phones are causing a distraction from learning and can impact on the development of respectful and supportive relationships.
Mobile phone conditions of use:
- Mobile phones must be switched off passed into the administration office at the beginning of the school day and collected from the office at the end of the school day.
- Year 11/12 students must have their phone turned off and stored in bags or lockers during class time and while on campus. If Year 11/12 students have no scheduled classes, they must be in the 11/12 classroom or student common room if they wish to use their mobile phone.
- Earphones are not permitted at any time, with any device, unless directed by the teacher where audio is required for the learning task when using a device.
- Students with ‘smart watches’ must have them set to ‘aeroplane mode’.
Please be aware that any communication between parents and students during the school day, will need to be through the School Admin Office.
Australian Curriculum Review – Have a say in what your child learns.
All students from Prep to Year 10 in Tasmanian schools are taught the Australian Curriculum.
The Curriculum is currently being reviewed and refined to ensure that it continues to be world class and best meet the needs of our students in our changing world. Families and school community members are invited to contribute to the review. This is an important opportunity and we encourage you to visit the website and have your say in what your child learns.
The website is open from 29 April – 8 July.

Grade 3-4 students made some beautiful key holders for their mothers for Mothers’ Day.
Students had learnt how to draw animals and birds by using familiar shapes and proportion and did a fantastic job in completing thus Mothers’ Day task. Well done Grade 3-4 students.
As part of the Grade 9 Biological unit we recently dissected a chicken wing. This gave students the opportunity to observe the muscles and bones that make up an arm, modelled by a chicken wing. Observing chicken wings are a good way to identify and learn functions of bones, joints, ligaments and tendons. The chicken wing operates much like our arms do by bending and moving.
The students demonstrated determination and resilience during the dissection, particularly while undertaking the slow and delicate process of removing the chicken skin! I was particularly impressed with the time and care students took completing this practical not only building their knowledge of anatomy but also dissection skills.
Well done Grade 9 A, thank you for your work.

Gala Day - Triathlon
On Friday 30th April it was Gala Day at Bicheno Primary School.
At the triathlon we learnt that a triathlon holds three different activities: swimming, bike riding and running. We also learnt that there is an event called aquathon which holds just two events running and swimming. This is how we did it.
For the swimming we used knee boards and slid across the tennis court then we jumped off the knee boards and hopped on to a pedal machine for fifteen seconds. Then we hopped off the pedal machine and ran the length of the tennis courts and did ten star jumps and then did it all again.
At the end of the triathlon the teachers that ran the triathlon gave us a triathlon Australia bracelet. Overall, it was a fun experience that we would love to do again.

Gala Day - AFL Report
We started our AFL experience with some hand-balling practice. We had to handball the footy through a gate made of cones, it was a little hard. We then did a ‘fast reflex’ game where we had to grab the ball before our opponent did. We finished by splitting into two teams and having a mini game, that was fun!
Our overall impression of the day was that it was great to be able to practice our footy skills and have a game. It was also great to have the different schools come together for a fabulous, fun filled Gala Day. We are looking forward to the next one.

Gala Day - Golf Report
On Friday 30th April, Grades 4, 5 and 6 went to a Gala Day at Bicheno with St Helens and Swansea. We tried many sports such as golf, netball, little athletics, triathlon, lawn bowl and soccer. Golf was our favourite one.
In golf we worked with My Golf Tasmania. Firstly we were just practicing hitting the mat, then we had a try to hit the golf ball into a hoola hoop next to a flag. Whoever got the closest to the hoop would win a hat, it was the best!
Gala Day - Netball Report
On Friday 30th April, the Grades 4, 5, and 6's went to Bicheno Primary School to attend a mixed school Gala Day with St Helens, St Marys, Swansea, and Bicheno all taking part in the event.
Some of the sports included netball, soccer, football, golf, lawn bowls, little athletics and a triathlon. I was involved in the group that had netball and it was by far the best one there. They taught us how to do a shoulder pass, a chest pass, and a bounce pass all in the correct way. We played a game where you had to run around the other group while they were passing the ball to each other and if you passed the ball more times than the other half of your group you won. One of the great things about the day was meeting others and making new friends. We would like to say thank you to all the people that made it happen.

Short courses are on Friday afternoons for Grade 7/8/9 and 10 students. Tie-Dyeing was introduced to the class in the Art Classroom with Mrs Lewis. Tie-Dye was popular in the 1960’s as Protest Art, then as Pop Fashion in the 70’s. It is popular because it is a source of comfort in tough times. The cotton material was soaked in soda ash for an hour, students tied their material using rubber bands and then poured dye solution onto the material. The dye is washed out in cold water the next day.

Gratitude
Gratitude is one of the topics I often discuss with children at school. Researchers have shown that having an ‘attitude of gratitude’ increases long-term happiness, contributes to greater life satisfaction and boosts self-esteem. It also reduces blood pressure and improves sleep.
Having an ‘attitude of gratitude’ is something that can take practice and time, for example consciously going through lists of things at the end of each day that you are grateful for. I also encourage children to do gratitude crafts and activities, such as writing things they are grateful for on autumn leaves and tying them to a branch, or going on gratitude scavenger hunts, finding things in nature they are grateful for.
Today I am grateful for warm sunny weather, the amazing colours of the autumn leaves and the sounds of happy children playing at school.
