ENE Cross Country
The ENE Cross Country has been postponed until Friday 18th June. Best of luck to the students selected to represent our school.
Mid-Year Reports and Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews
Next Friday, 18th June, mid-year reports will come home for Prep to Grade 10 students. This week, information on how to book in for these Parent-Student-Teacher conversations has been posted home, shared through our Schoolzine App and also in this newsletter. All parents are encouraged to book in and have a discussion with teacher/s about their child/ren’s learning. Bookings can be made for face-to face interviews or, if parents are unable to make it to St Marys District School, phone bookings are an option. Students are encouraged to attend and be part of these learning discussions.
This year the Interviews will be held in the Performing Arts Centre at the St Marys Campus. Parents are asked to enter the PAC via the ‘old entrance’ where you will be able to sign in. Tea/coffee will be available for anyone waiting.
Fingal Campus parents should have also received a letter this week. Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews for Fingal Campus will be arranged on an individual basis over the last two weeks of this term.
Attendance
Our current attendance is 82%. On your child’s mid-year report there will be a statement indicating your child’s attendance rate so far this year. Every day at school is important. Because each lesson relates to the next, missing school makes learning harder. In Tasmania, students can only miss a day of school where there is a medical reason, or a set of special circumstances. Please contact your child’s teacher if you are concerned about your child/ren’s attendance.
COVID Update
In the past two weeks we were reminded how quickly the health and safety of a community can force us back into lockdown with the recent events in Melbourne highlighting the unpredictable nature of the current pandemic. It is important for us to not be complacent in our own prevention and management measures here in Tasmania.
Whilst we are still in the enviable position of being COVID free in our community for over 12 months, the risk of an outbreak in Tasmania is still very real.
As a school we are still asking students and families to abide by the changes we put in place in 2020 to mitigate any likelihood of community transmission. At St Marys DS this means:
Keep your children home if they are unwell, particularly if they exhibit respiratory like symptoms.
- Have yourselves or your children tested if you or they have any respiratory like symptoms.
- Avoid sending your children back to school if they are unwell, even if they are COVID free.
- When visiting our site please check in at the main office, maintaining physical distancing.
- If on-site for events like parent teacher, cross country or sports days, please sign in using the “Check-In Tas” App. These QR codes are located at sign in points.
- Sanitise when entering our site.
- Students are continuing to maintain regular hand washing at the beginning and end of each learning block.
The Department of Education has been working on a detailed plan about what schools and schooling will look like if we have any community transmission of COVID in Tasmania again.
During these still uncertain times I ask all of our community to not be complacent about the risks caused by COVID, remember the strategies we need to use to keep each other safe and please follow all our school-based management measures if you are on our site for any reason.
We can’t stress enough the importance of following the Public Health guidelines so that we can continue to enjoy the relatively uninterrupted arrangements to daily life, that other parts of our country are unable to
Public Holiday
A reminder that next Monday 14th June is a public holiday. Students return on Tuesday 15th June. Enjoy the long weekend.

We look forward to meeting with parents to discuss the learning which has occurred this year.
On Friday the 4th of June, a delegation of St Marys students and young East Coast citizens attended the Tasmanian Youth Forum in Launceston.
The topic of this year’s forum was ‘transport’. This topic was very meaningful for our regional community who have less access to public transport than our state's urban centres.
Our students considered various aspects of the topic, including accessibility and personal car ownership.
The event focused on solutions rather than problems. The day culminated with Elise S. giving a speech to the entire room, including members of parliament, about our group's perspective and vision.
The Tasmanian Youth Forum was an amazing opportunity for our students to have their voice heard directly by the state’s decision makers.

KINGS MEADOWS HIGH SCHOOL
A small team of secondary students attended the Inter-High Cross-Country Carnival at Kings Meadows High School on Tuesday 1st June. St Marys District School students participated in division two and finished forth overall at the end of the day. We congratulate all students who attended this event on their bravery to compete in a very challenging activity and the fabulous way they represented our school. Outstanding achievements came from Matthew Englymar, finishing second in the grade 7 boys event and Zali Taylor, finishing second in the grade 9 girls event. Congratulations must also go to Matthew Sonda-Nielson and Jimmy Freiboth who both ran up an age group in order to allow for our schools eligibility for the overall teams competition.
Well done to our Primary students who had very successful entries in the Arts and Crafts section of the Campbell Town Show!
STATE WOOLHANDLING TRIALS - CAMPBELL TOWN SHOW
Congratulations Catherine - Year 11 who was runner up in the Novice Woolhandling trials at Campbell Town Show. Catherine has been working on her skills for a number of years and her success has qualified her for National Titles later in the year. Representing Tasmania at National Trials has been a goal of Catherine's for a number of years. Well done and congratulations Catherine, we can't wait to see you in action in Bendigo later this year.
WOOL
Students learnt about wool fibre. Wool is obtained from sheep and other animals including cashmere and mohair from goats and rabbits. Wool consists of protein together with a small percertage of lipids (fats and oils).
Wool can be used for clothing, carpets, blankets, upholstery, horse blankets and insulatin.
Information was brainstormed in 1/2/3/4/5 class.
ART WORK
Term 2 students created wheel pots, mould pots and small sculptures that they made out of clay, and waited 3 weeks for them to dry before they were fired in the kiln. Once fired, students learnt how to glaze their pots and then they were refired before being given to the students to take home.
After some recent rain, we found a family of snails hiding under our sandpit cover. We had lots of questions and wonderings about snails. We made a habitat for them in a glass tank and brought them inside so we could spend time observing them. We noticed lots of interesting things as they moved around.
We have been reading, talking and finding out about snails. We looked closely at the patterns on the shells and found it interesting that their shell is a spiral shape. We created our own snail artwork being careful to create a pattern on their shell.
We also explored clay and made our own clay snails. We learnt how to roll the clay to make the spiral shell. Some people decided to made snakes that coil around like a snails shell.
We have decided to keep our snails as class pets, just for a little while longer. They seem very happy in their tank and enjoy coming out for a visit. They slide around on their long foot and make a lovely slimy trail. We love watching them.
These notices have been sent home to parents in the last fortnight. If you did not receive one and would like to receive a copy of the notice, please contact the school office on 63 723 900.
