We hope everyone had a restful and happy holiday. Term 2 is always very busy with lots of learning in classrooms and numerous events scheduled. Student excursions to AGFEST, the Campbell Town Show, a performance of Roald Dahl’s ‘The Twits’, the Science and Engineering Challenge and the Bay of Fires Art Exhibition are just some off the offsite curriculum experiences our students will participate in. Later this term the Premier’s Reading Challenge will begin, and Year 10 students will attend Open Days at Newstead and Launceston Colleges. A number of sporting events are held this term as well, including AFL Clinics, Winter Sports and Cross Country Carnivals. Keep an eye on our school website and Facebook page for regular updates on all Term 2 events and happenings.

MDT/Art Block Re-Development and Primary Accessible Bathroom
We are pleased to communicate with you that the builders are currently on-schedule with the re-development of the MDT/Art block. A lot of ‘unseen’ work has been happened below ground level and inside the building and over the last holidays the slab for the Art room was laid. The work that will happen this term will be far more visible, with walls starting to appear.
The building team have made good progress on the new accessible bathroom in the Primary block. This facility will result in us being able to better support students, by reducing distance between our younger students and an accessible bathroom space.
Uniform
At St Marys District School we want all students to have a positive sense of community and pride in the school. Uniform is an important part of this. We are very pleased to see so many students wearing their uniform with pride and are appreciative of parents/carers efforts to ensure students are wearing the correct clothing. Students can wear a plain black long sleeve top under their polo but casual non-uniform hoodies are not to be worn. A reminder that the following clothing items are not part of our every day uniform: board shorts, sports shorts, steel capped boots.
If you need support with your child’s uniform you can talk to your child’s teacher or AST to discuss your family’s eligibility for support or assistance in the purchase of school uniforms.
Puffer Jackets – Thank you SMDS School Association Committee and St Marys District School Op Shop Volunteers!
Our SMDS School Association puffer jackets have arrived. A huge thank you must go out to our School Association committee and St Marys Op Shop volunteers for their donation of a puffer jacket for every student enrolled at St Marys District School. Currently, School Association committee members are working their way through the mountains of puffer jacket boxes, sizing and naming the jackets. As soon as this work is done students will receive their jacket. Stay tuned for lots of photos of our grateful and warm students!
Beanies
With the colder weather, we remind students and families that all students have been ‘gifted’ a SMDS Beanie from the School Association and it might be time to hunt around at home to see if it can be found. If your child’s beanie has joined the ‘lost sock’ in your household, replacement beanies can be purchased at the school offices at a cost of $11 each.
As with all uniform items, non-SMDS Beanies are not part of our school uniform and are not to be worn on school grounds.
Every School Day Matters
Make every school day count!
Going to school every day gives your child every chance to learn and grow, and connect with their mates and teachers. It’s where bright futures start and where they’ll benefit the most.
When your child goes to school every day, it helps them to:
- learn better
- find interests
- make friends
- connect with teachers
- be happier
- have a brighter future.
If you’re struggling to get your child to school, help is available. Please talk to us at school about your situation. We’ll support you, in whatever way we can.

Student Behaviour Management Policy
St Marys District School, along with all other Tasmanian Government schools, is committed to providing students with a learning environment that supports them to be the best they can be. We work hard to provide safe, supportive and inclusive environments where your child can engage positively with their learning.
To strengthen the way that schools prevent and respond to bullying, from Term One 2023, all Tasmanian Government schools will have implemented the Student Behaviour Management policy. This policy replaces the existing Respectful Student Behaviour Policy.
The important change between the old policy and the new policy is that now all schools will have the same minimum standards for preventing and responding to bullying. The new policy also has a clear definition of what bullying is and sets clear expectations for how we support students impacted by bullying.
These changes mean that the way St Marys District School prevents and responds to bullying will meet the same standards as all other Tasmanian Government Schools. Some schools may incorporate different programs or measures to respond to bullying, but all will have the same foundation.
